Finalists Announced on or around 6/12
Building things for people who need them the most is the noblest pursuit. The Assistive Tech challenge calls for projects that help people with disabilities to learn, work, move around, and simply live their lives to the fullest. So get out there, identify a real assistive need, and take a swing at solving it. Small hacks or large projects, we want to see how you can make peoples' lives better.

Further to the post from @Stephen Craver yesterday, I received an email back end of June to say the finalists would be announced the week of 10th July. Having been a week since that date I'm also requesting an update regarding the outcome of the Assistive Tech 1st round.

Hey all it seems that we might hear something this week based on replies here, but I don't know for sure yet https://hackaday.io/contest/190152-supplyframe-designlab-2023-hackaday-prize#j-discussions-title

I am reaching out to express my concern regarding the lack of communication regarding the Assistive Tech finalist for well over a month now. At this point, I can't help but wonder if the project has been canceled or if there are no winners selected. Could you kindly provide some clarification on this matter?
I want to emphasize that the prize was never the primary goal for me. The true value lies in the collaborative effort of these brilliant minds coming together to create objects that can positively impact the lives of others. I sincerely appreciate the platform Hackaday provides for fostering such innovation and enabling individuals to contribute to the betterment of society.
Regardless of the outcome, I believe that all the contributors who dedicated their time and expertise to this project are winners. Their commitment to developing assistive technologies demonstrates their passion and dedication to making a difference in the lives of those in need. I want to express my gratitude to Hackaday and all the contributors involved for their remarkable efforts.
However, I would greatly appreciate it if you could update us on the status of the Assistive Tech finalist and provide some clarity regarding the selection process and timeline for announcing the winners. Clear communication will not only alleviate any uncertainties but also demonstrate the transparency and professionalism that Hackaday has consistently exhibited.
Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Food for thought: in 2024 can we call this the "The Hackaday Disability Tech Challenge" ?
It's always seemed off to me that the people this is serving are not in title. Anyone know the reasoning behind it?

I'd assume that, like so many other descriptive terms that have become politically incorrect over the years, "disability" has become a Bad Word. Nobody seems to have figured out that no matter what word you use, it will eventually be used pejoratively by someone. We need more tolerance for each other, not keep trying to change the language.
Are you sure? yes | no
are you disabled? I think its good to let the community of people being talked about to decide the language. Im not saying either are "bad words" Im just saying if we have a contest to help disabled people, it would help to name that. Disabled is the current word to describe...uhh...disabled people.
Are you sure? yes | no
no, I'm not disabled myself, but I have two kids who are. The language has indeed changed in many places... One example is in schools (at least here in Washington state) the current term is "special needs" students.

From the list of finalists (and lack of some projects in it), I very much doubt it could be the case. Results leave impression that judging was done on the basis of how it looks instead of how useful/important it is

They emailed about technical difficulties and the new date is the week of the 10th.
I can't imagine going through all the entries, lots of work! Thanks to the judges!

I also have not seen any finalists; it says on or around 6/12. They did post this Instagram vid update: https://www.instagram.com/p/Ctuo67ePGaF/

Thanks for this link! Man oh man, I wish this video would be presented by someone with legit severe disabilities. The presenter frames everything in terms of what we /can't/ do - like "pity the poor invalids" and "tech will save them" rather than a focus of how cool these projects are and how disability tech will support disabled people coming to the table with neat inventions and contributions to society. We need disabled people in the spotlight!

Where do you announce the finalists? I haven't seen anything for either of the first two challenges that are now closed.

They have the first challenge finalists here: https://hackaday.com/2023/05/11/hackaday-prize-2023-meet-the-ten-re-engineering-education-finalists/
Since they are using a .com and .io TLD, along with a supplyframe domain I have found it difficult to track all the posts.

Hi Mike - Im disabled as well, trying to invent cool things for our community :) I think the link above is all project submissions for all categories, so there's a little sifting to find which ones are for disability tech. I also have a project you can check out here:) https://hackaday.io/project/190502-wheelchair-ez-motion

Dear @Mike , @CriptasticHacker and others. How can we solve that problem of finding what you need? What about aggregating adequate solutions? Would you be interested in setting up a dedicated project?
Please send me a PM if your interested and check out https://groups.google.com/g/icocread

Hi @Ildaron - Your project has been submitted to Re-engineering Education, Assistive Tech, and Op Amp Challenge. Good luck competing for the Prize!

I've built a Sat Nav and Telemetry Console for Scuba Diving, Snorkelling and Kayaking which in the next two weeks, hopefully before the Assistive Tech category end date, will have audio/haptic guidance/directions added so that partially sighted / blind people can enjoy water-borne activities. They would still have a companion with them, but importantly they would not need to be physically guided, for example by someone holding their hand. I hope I can empower people challenged with physical disabilities with the wonderful sensation of being weightless underwater in a safe and controlled environment, for example in swimming pool or at a dive training lake - even in calm seas!

Excited for this contest! As a disabled engineer, I know it's rare for us to be able to design our own assistive devices. It's really different (and rewarding) designing around my own access needs! I hope it can encourage others to invent and explore with our input. Here's the project :)

This is so inspiring. As a challenged person (MS, with ambulatory issues), it warms my heart knowing people care and are willing to help.
God bless you Hackaday, and anyone willing to enter this contest. Who knows? Your idea just may change someone’s life.
