Not a Big fan of the darkmode background
Lee Abbott wrote 07/07/2021 at 19:56 • -1 pointI would appreciate a way to lighten the back-ground of the Hack-a-day pages. Love your site and find some very interesting and innovative projects. Keep up the good work.

The only use I have found for "dark mode" is to quickly, at a glance, differentiate between two applications. For instance, I have a python IDE in "light mode" and an editor for webXML stuff in dark mode. In overview mode, i can pick the one I need without thinking or really looking. Apart from that, I could not really care less about the colour mode..

Arguing about light vs dark themes is like arguing about sugar vs salt. Light themes make sense on a bright day, dark themes are better at night, everything in between is personal preference.
You can use the excellent Dark Reader browser plugin to not only darken bright sites but also to lighten up the dark ones. You can store your preference per site, so that only Hackaday is brightened. The plugin works on most desktop browsers, and I use it on Firefox mobile, too. No css skills needed, just fiddle with some sliders.

I'm not arguing the lite or dark themes, all I'm am trying to say is that I wish the programmers would give ME the option of how I choose to view their site. . . I was not aware of the plug in, thanks for pointing that out .

Gravis, with certain aspects you are correct, there are many benefits to the dark background. But my old eyes have a tough time with the darkened grey on black. There are some instances (Not this site) where I just can't see that there is a button to roll over. I would just prefer to have the option to choose how it suits me best.

Everybody is different. I don't really like dark backgrounds either, even though I know all the benefits I just don't enjoy them.
There's not too much you can do since this is hackaday.io's theme. You could 'hack' it (a day?) using a browser-specific tool like MyStyle (a Chrome/Brave extension) will let you modify a site's theme if you know CSS. This is the route I took since I use Brave. the job I did is far from perfect (lots of dark stuff still pops up) but it does for me.

It's literally easier to read light text on dark background than vice versa. Why would you prefer your face get blasted with way more light than necessary? Seriously, it messes with your brain.
