zakqwyI have my viewpoints on the subject, but I'd like to hear others. What are the pros and cons of protecting a project's intellectual property? When does it make sense to do one or the other, and can a hybrid still be considered "open"? Will keeping a hardware project completely open source ultimately doom it to commoditization?

I don't think anyone is safe from another one being able to replicate his works, so all this protection stuff gives you only some time advantage - in the end you have to live through innovation.
