I wounder if you could put the resistors on the other side, and also have holes for them, so that the back would be completely smooth.

Nice Packaging. Do you have a picture of this display in action? And one more question: Which PCB thickness did you used here? 0.6mm?
You could use a SMT pad for the top diffuser PCB instead of the through hole pads. It is a bit more tricky for alignment, but the pcb can still be stacked and soldered together.
