Google kept Motorola’s ATAP (advanced technology and prototypes) department and continued work on the modular smartphone known as project Ara. The phone would allow users swap out modules (battery, camera, screen, etc.) at will. The modules used magnets to keep the parts in place while allowing simple changes. This project was designed with magnetic, modular components in mind. The back was a thin piece of plywood with a matrix of small neodymium magnets located back. This allowed the modulus to be designed in a scalable grid pattern with magnets to allow for a parts of a variety of sizes to be added to the tablet. The tablet was battery powered and used a small android powered computer to run the system.
