A couple of days ago I picked up this sweet street lamp from Rebuilding Center for $5! I thought it might make a nice focal point to put at the top of the patio heater I'm using. It was wired to be an electric light, but it turns out that the design still has hold-overs from the days when street lamps like these used to be powered by gas, and so I was able to just remove the electrical wiring, and use the piping for gas.
I ordered some gas mantles for camping lanterns on Amazon for a few bucks, and just clipped them over the pipes where the wires used to be. When I put flammable gas through the top, and fired it up they lit right up with a nice incandescent glow!
Interesting side note: Camping lanterns these days produce a noticeably yellower and dimmer light than they used to- back in the day they used to be made with the radioactive element Thorium, which made them produce a more brilliant white light. People eventually caught on that this was probably not the best idea, and now you can only get Thorium-free mantles. Ah well.)
