I received STM8S001J3M3 samples from ST, and also a small PCB for the µC and the required capacitors. Assembling it didn't take long (by the way, soldering appears to be an efficient cure for a jet-lag)..As expected, the STM8S103F3 "STM8EF MINDEV" binary worked right away. However, since there is no NRST pin, and pin8 is bonded to PD1/SWIM and PD5/UART1_TX, once the Forth console runs, flashing is impossible unless UART1_TX is disabled (e.g. with the command 0 $5235 C!).
