Licensing scare

A project log for FATCAT: Altoids Tin Mod Tracker

A drum machine, base synth and arpeggiator that fits in your pocket. User interface inspired by classic mod tracker software.

In the planning stages of the FATCAT project, I'd decided to devise some kind of 3D-printable inner case, used for isolating the PCB from the Altoids tin.

Before trying my hand at designing that 3D-model myself, I decided to check if someone on the Web hadn't designed an Altoids tin 3D-model already. I figured that I could use that as a basis for the inner case by just shrinking it slightly. My OpenSCAD models invariably turn out shoddy and I also figured this could save me quite a bit of time.

And as is usually the case on the Internet, someone already did the thing you thought of doing before you thought of it. In this case that someone was Thingiverse user "mussy". He/she had very competently designed the exact PLA-friendly Altoids tin substitute I'd imagined, with container and lid printable as separate parts.

After a few hours with Tinkercad I had managed to turn the container part of "mussy"s design into a functional and also pretty cool looking inner case for my project.

Fast-forward to present day... Right before publishing my remix on this project page I started feeling a nagging discomfort. Was the original design Creative commons "Share alike", or had I just assumed it was?

When revisiting "mussy"s page I kicked myself. The licence was "No derivatives", which meant I couldn't publish my remix.

So I contacted "mussy" (and I'll just assume he's a "he" from here on) and he was the nicest guy! He replied within the hour, and explained that he'd had problems in the past with people copying his designs for commercial purposes and that he, for that reason, had to switch to a more restrictive license for all his designs. But he offered to temporarily switch to the less restrictive "Share alike" while I published my remix.

I must say that the few people I've had any contact with on Thingiverse have just been exceedingly friendly and helpful. Restores your faith in humanity in no-time.

So in conclusion: Thanks again "mussy". You made my day!
