This AM radio uses a D7642 IC . It has a PNP transistor to amplify the sound coming out from the 8 Ohm Speaker. With a home-made coil wrapped around a old empty thread spool (with an antenna and ground) ... and the given tuning capacitor ,i was able to pick up a Radio Station as far away as Grenada. (THAT IS RADIO GRENADA (IN THE CARIBBEAN) AT 1400 KHZ AM) . I also get stations from neighbouring South American countries. This project was taken directly from ELENCO SNAP CIRCUIT/KIT,MODEL SC-500 , Project 306

SNAP CONNECTOR /WIRES ... TO PUT PARTS TOGETHER ... THESE CONNECTORS ARE CONDUCTORS ... THEY HAVE METAL WIRES INSIDE THEM
Turn on the slide switch and adjust the variable capacitor for a radio station. Make sure to set the variable resistor control to the left for louder sound . (TAKEN FROM ELECTRONIC SNAP CIRCUITS/KITS SC-500 , PROJECT 306)
Nostalgic trivia: Ferranti ZN414. This looks like a descendant. Apparently the ZN414 is still available. It and this didn't use the standard superhet configuration.
Thanks for your comment Ken. I have heard about the ZN414, but never used it .
