ESP IR Universal Remote

Okay, so I don't know about most other people but I for one an constantly losing the various remote controls in my living room to a point at which I decided enough was enough.

I wanted a single device that I couldn't lose to replace all the remotes, the simplest way to solve this was to screw the device to the wall but this brings up several more problems like how do i use something that is not in my hand and how do i point it in such a way that it can see all the required devices.

This lead me to the ever popular ESP8266 WiFi module. I chose the Arduino IDE for development as I just wanted to knock this together quickly and it was already installed :-).

The case was designed in TinkerCAD and allows the device to be mounted in the top corned of the room where it should have a good view of all the devices to be controlled.

The ESP serves two web pages, one that allows the user to setup the remote tabs and buttons as well as record the IR codes from existing physical remotes. The other page is the main interface displaying the remote and button layouts as described previously.

When the user clicks a button on the web page the ESP produces the corresponding sequence of IR flashes using the trio of IR LED's on the board.

I thought the case was just a neat artistic thing, but it's even better now that I realize it's meant to mount up in the corner where all the electronics should have a clear line-of-sight to it.

Really looking forward to seeing where you take this one, it's a fantastic idea. Are you considering entering it into the Hackaday Prize this year?

Thank you for the positive feedback, the case just seemed like a logical choice but I am rather pleased with it :-).

I never really thought about any of the competitions, the entries are always of a really high calibre.

Can you have multiple remotes (for multiple rooms) on the same network?

Thank you for the kind words, currently multiple physical remotes can be consolidated into the device but I really like the idea of covering multiple rooms as well. Thanks for a great idea!

It may be over-complicating things, but having a master-slave setup would be cool. The master could host the webserver, and forward appropriate commands to the slaves. That way you don't have to search for the correct room - all rooms could be on the same page. That would take quite a bit of development though...

Another question - Have you considered using an ESP8266-01? They're cheaper and smaller. But with their limitations, I don't know if they would work for this application.

I like this a lot! Simple, but useful, and in a significantly more tasteful case than I would have designed.

If you can crack how to make the web UI configurable and the IR auto-learnable, you could have something that even my father-in-law could use.

The case is designed to fit in the upper corner of a room hopefully with a view of all the equipment to be controlled.

The UI is configurable in the latest version of the firmware but its a bit clunky at the moment (hand editing JSON) but at least firmware doesn't need to be re-flashed.

Within the editing screen there is functionally to record and make available the IR code for inclusion in the layout.
