Or just cool the motor... it's amazing what a CPU heatsink / fan will do to cool a stepper motor.

Stepper motors get hot. I'd suggest printing in a higher temp material (e.g. ABS (cough) or whatever) or possibly leaving room for a thermal isolation layer. e.g. wool or fiberglass or whatever between the motor and plastic.
