The Weller WD1 is a soldering station that mostly works well, but in a university environment with several tens of units some of the LCDs started failing. Some of the segments turn on, but it is not enough for any useful information to be conveyed. An original replacement display cannot be obtained, and the PCBs with the display attached cost around 200€. During this project I am going to explore the various ways in which the problem can be solved. Some of them will be more cost-effective and simple than others, but exploring how the device works is as interesting as figuring out how to fix it.
