The unmodified circuit is from the "Pigeon's Nest" website. The webmaster said that he is the original designer and is happy for me to reproduce his circuit here.

It was designed to replace the obsolete LM3909 in the Pink Floyd "Pulse" album packaging. 

It also extended the battery life from 6 months to several years.
