The entire sensor design is modeled with the open source design tool FreeCAD. Not just the 3D printed parts, but even the PCB traces, hardware and other bits.
I use a design process that I refer to as emergent design. The basic approach is to start with a minimally viable part, then rapidly iterate through rounds of prototypes making incremental improvements along the way.

Despite FreeCAD's temperamental nature, I have managed to create a fully constrained, dimension driven design for every part.

At this point the model has over 100 revisions and is nearing an optimal point.
