kristina panosAt this point, all four pieces are printed, but have not been fully cleaned up yet. Boy, a person can really spend a lot of time making prints look nice.
I have ordered and received most of the components, which reminds me that I need to update the components list.
I need to study up on key matrix theory and build a 'lil matrix on a breadboard before I wire this thing up. Does that deserve its own project? Sometimes I wish we could link projects together more obviously, or have space for sub-projects. I supposed I could make a Page for it instead.

I was going to recommend you consider the Holtite hot swap sockets to allow you to "easily" remove and replace them on the pins of the key switches. But I have been locked in disagreement with an eBay seller this morning over 10 sockets I bought to try out and they are rubbish (and probably fake - the real things are NOT cheap on digikey)! The Kailh hot swap sockets I have bought from CN are waaay better and about quarter of the price but may not be as easy for your build because they are inherently pairs of pins. Might be worth a try though as they do fit nicely and leave a tab for soldering protruding from each side.

Wouldn't I need a PCB to use those? This will be hand-wired.

I don't think they'd be hard to hand solder without a PCB whatsoever. The PCB contacts look like solder cups - almost crimpable to the wires. There's plenty of metal there. I took some pictures of one on a key switch for scale: https://photos.app.goo.gl/4ABiYxQK7hPKnKoz8
