Raspberry Pi Cluster Retired

A project log for Raspberry Pi Ceph Cluster

A Raspberry Pi Ceph Cluster using 2TB USB drives.

I've retired the Raspberry Pis as Ceph machines and replaced them with asustor NAS boxes.  The USB hard drives started suffering alarmingly frequent failures in the USB-to-SATA controllers.  The actual 2.5" drives were fine, with one exception, but the high failure rate of the USB controllers became a showstopper.  The complete lack of availability of new Raspberry Pis during Covid and the price increase on the 5th generation led me to the conclusion that I would be better off with fewer systems even if they cost slightly more.  I ended up choosing the asustor AS670xT series because they were capable of running most Linux server distros on the bare metal with out any bios or hardware tweaks.

I've repurposed the Raspberry Pis for various purposes including an Incus cluster and various data logging hacks.
