This design is even more compact than my last one.

The PCB below looks realy cluttered and it is - because the PIC microcontroller and the 7 segment displays occupy the same space.  

The PIC microcontroller is mounted at the centre of the board horizontally and the two displays will directly on top but they are mounted into a line of pin headers. The pin headers jack up the displays sufficiently that the PIC can sit underneath them direclty on the PCB. 

So this is a kinda 3D design.
