What is the "Teeny-Tiny Turntable"?
You know those kits you find in tiny boxes within Barnes and Noble or Urban Outfitters containing desk toys like "The Mini Zen Gardening Kit" or "The Mini Bonsai Kit"? Well this Teeny-Tiny Turntable kit was released in 2017 and contains a very cute and rather useless plastic turntable, three small "records", and a cute little book detailing facts about records. The turntable plays three different short tunes depending on which plastic record is placed on it. From what I can tell, each record has magnets placed in different places which indicate to the turntable what song to play.
How are you going to upgrade it?
My plan is to use a Raspberry Pi Zero W and a cheap NFC reader to allow the turntable to play any album in the world, so long as it can be found on Spotify. Each record will have an NFC sticker attached so that when it is placed on the turntable, the Raspberry Pi can trigger a particular album to play on Spotify.
Where will the music be played?
My first goal is for the turntable to trigger music to play through the Spotify Connect API so that an external device capable of playing from Spotify can play the album. Once that is done, I will see if the Raspberry Pi Zero is capable of streaming the music and playing it through a speaker. The case is extremely small, and even with most of the internal plastic stripped out the Raspberry Pi barely fits. I may try and use a Micro USB to headphone jack converter if possible and hook that up to a tiny speaker, but I might not have enough room to plug it in. Another, much cuter option is to use this Mini SubWOOFer kit and have the music play through bluetooth via the tiny dog speaker.
And that's the gist of it! I'll update this project as it comes along, but if you want to follow my updates then feel free to follow me on Twitter @IdreesInc or on Instagram!
