I've gone to my friends at Steamy Tech to design a laser cut wood and acrylic case for the clock. I've decided that this project is going to be available in my Tindie store and I've decided to make it a complete product with a case (you will be able to just buy it as a board-only "quick kit").
At the same time, the version 2 boards came back with the buck converter and the tenth-of-a-second digit and the PPS line connected to the ICP pin. The result works and looks beautiful. The current draw is actually less than I expected - it's under 200 mA @ 5V - even with an active antenna.
Nothing really to do now but ramp up production!
