Block 2 dreams

A project log for Starship incense holder

Making frankincense multiplanetary

The last starship print from late 2022 was in a pretty sad state.  Much was cut off while experimenting to improve airflow.  No attempt to deflect the smoke out of the ship worked.  The essential oil just got trapped in the nose & stuck to whatever it encountered, PLA or smooth packing tape.  It didn't go through a hole on top.  A flat internal panel would make it top heavy.

Started converging on having just the booster & enlarging it to cover the incense.  The ship would be well above the booster, just decorative, & completely open on 1 side.  Given the size of the incense stick & the room needed to diffuse the smoke below the ship, it would have to be a pretty big full stack.  It was really heading towards just the booster.

There were no good ideas for printing a hot staging ring.  It would have to be filled in.  If an inner support was offset to create the illusion of gaps, it might be top heavy.  This would trap smoke.  A long shot would be printing it as a panel & bending it around a tool with heat.  It's still waiting for block 2 & the new launch mount.

Hard to believe they've been using the same booster design since mid 2022 now, 3 years on.  It's made lions ponder continuing to modify the block 1 incense burner.  They bit off too much by making block 2 require raptor 3 so now they're facing a long gap between the last block 1 & the 1st block 2 booster.

The launch mount has a problem of obstructing the engines.  A radical idea would be to scrap the launch mount.  Tilt the full stack over 45deg to liberate more smoke.  Support it in the middle.  Keep the detachable engine section for cleaning & accessing the incense.  There still has to be a metal piece below the engine section to position the incense.  It could be supported separately.  The base would become quite large.

A practical compromise would be to keep the current tilt while getting rid of the launch mount.  Support the booster in the middle & keep the existing metal plate.

As long as a metal plate is needed below the engines, nothing is as convenient as having the launch mount.  It's just the easiest way to dump the incense from the booster.  The launch mount could be replaced with minimal supports to see the engines.  The plunger for changing incense should go in the back to reveal more engines.

The metal plate could be replaced by a magnetically attached V plate inside the booster.  That could reposition the incense.  Then it wouldn't need any stuff under the engine section.

During the booster redesign, it became clear that the engines couldn't line the front because the back had a necessary attachment point.  The farsteners would be obstructed.  They would have to point up from the bottom instead of down from the top.

There were doubts about gaps between the engines being possible.  Gap areas like the engines & the hot staging ring all need a supporting panel.

Eventually arrived at something that would print over 24 hours. There were a lot of block 1 features mixed with what little knowledge of block 2 came out before Elon lost interest & moved to politics.
