The 512GB Floppy Disk

This floppy disk can hold 512GB!

Similar projects worth following
Floppy disks are outdated, can't hold hardly anything, and no one uses them any more. That's exactly why I wanted to do a retro mashup project with one!

I thought it would be pretty ironic to have a floppy disk that could hold 512GB, so that's what I set out to do.

My main goal was to keep the floppy disk as original as possible during the modification.

(I had to repost this project for the Hack it Back contest)

The challenge: to increase the storage capacity of a floppy disk.

While I took a more unconventional approach to increasing the storage of a floppy disk, I still think it's a unique project that might turn heads.

Sure, the floppy disk itself is not usable in the traditional sense, but it is still a storage medium...for a storage medium.

I wanted to keep this project very simple and to retain the look of a floppy disk as much as possible. Here are a few details for this project:

  • 2 × Neodymium magnet
  • 4 × Heavy cardstock
  • 1 × Cellophane tape
  • 1 × Adhesive vinyl
  • 1 × 3.5" floppy disk

  • GB not gb

I realize I made a simple mistake with the abbreviation for gigabyte! It should be shown as GB not gb.

  • Why only 512GB?

Some people have asked, "Why not more storage?" You could just buy a large micro sd card and say, "5 terabyte floppy". Yes, I could have, but those cards are not cheap. I wanted to use what I had laying around, or low cost options.
