ADD HDMI INPUT TO HYBRID HDMI-DP TO HDMI KVM

Description

I just needed an HDMI KVM with two inputs and one output.

I bought a device that matched all my requirements (KVM201DP):
- 2 HDMI inputs (or so I thought).
- 2 USB inputs with B connector (the toughest IMHO).
- 1 HDMI output.
- 4 USB outputs
- 1 remote physical button to switch the inputs.
- All needed cables provided.

After receiving it, I immediately noticed it was a hybrid device, with one HDMI input and one DP input.

So I thought, let's see what's inside, and see if I can hack it!,

After a little bit of digging I found out that DP to HDMI conversion is not a simple conversion when done "properly", but there are simple converters that use the DP interface to transmit HDMI compatible data, this requires a DP++ source.

Many converters use this type of conversion, and after reverse-engineering this device, it turns out, it uses this type of conversion.

So an alternative HMDI input can be added just connecting the right signals from the DP inp

Components

1 × KVM201DP KVM switch (available on many online stores)

1 × HDMI female breakout board (test board) or bare connector

Start by adding solder to bottom pads, if required

At least, in my unit, it seems the fab only did the SMD soldering and used it to solder even through-hole components, but this results in sub-optimal solders:

So my advice is to solder them properly:

Find the best spot to put the HDMI connector and plan accordingly

In my case, the new HDMI connector will sit on top of the DP connector, with the flat side facing down:

So, to be able to insert the HDMI cable without problems, I sanded/filed the bent edge of the DP connector because it was a little bit taller than the HDMI connector sheet.

It's just a tiny bit, until you feel there is no down step when trying to slide your finger nail from the DP housing into the HDMI housing.

Depending on your device and HDMI connector YMMV.

WARNING!:
If possible, use a location that blocks the use of both DP and HDMI connectors (as shown), otherwise add a label or something as a warning. Using both will short DP and HDMI sources together, and could damage some devices. You've been warned!.

Cut the panel according to the desired mounting position:

It is hard metal, so do some holes if you want to save time before the final filing work.
