While working on my other project [Gameboy motherboard based on ESP32] I had a feeling that most of the result can be achieved for much less. If you take away all the small details that make Gameboy so great, it would be still a cool NES emulator. But simplicity would make it possible to assemble yourself, even if you're not experienced electrical engineer.
This project aims to be a fun evening activity with appealing end result that you'd be happy to use once in a while.
It connects off-the-shelf components together on the custom built motherboard. Therefore it would be within a reach of complete beginners.
It uses Wemos module in it's heart, so you can pick to use ESP8266, ESP32-C3, ESP32-S2 or ESP32-S3 based on your preference.
Make sure that all parts came in good shape and no apparent damage is done on the way. (If not flashed yet) flash Play-ESP software to the Wemos module just to make sure it works.

Solder Buzzer in place
Solder in the buzzer on the back side of the PCB. Note the polarity.
3
Solder Wemos module - headers to module first
Solder headers to the Wemos module. Long part of the header should be directed to the motherboard. Make sure to align them right, use motherboard as an aligning tool. When soldered it will be tightly pressed against battery socket.
Start with just one pin each side and double check your work. Then you can proceed to other pins
