Production Speed Bump

A project log for SAO Speak and Spell

First PCB board design and SAO in one project motivated by Supercon 2024

In the process of ordering a small batch of boards for proofing from jlcpcb I have encountered an unexpected bump. Red solder mask and black silk screen are not a combo option that I can select. It has to be red and black! I'm getting "yellow" by exposing the FR4. I have a message in to support to see what my options are. Yes, I could consider a full color silk screen board but then it's not the same challenge of working with "traditional" limits of PCB design. If I have to go full color silk screen I'll have some serious redesign work to do. The clock in ticking...

I was looking at doing an SAO that needs 3 colors: Black, Red, and Silver. It's almost a shoe-in for PCB color design, but I ran into the same issue you did. I do have a (relatively) easy solution: Black Sharpie. Order with white silkscreen where you need the black, and just color it in.

It's a big lift if you're trying to a lot of them, but if you want to make 10 or 20 or so, it's not too bad. I've also thought of 3D printing a stencil I could place over the PCB, and using something like a spray-paint or an enamel of some sort...

I'm going to try the white on red and see how it goes for now for general board function. Sharpie will be good for the prototype. Someone pointed out that you can do the black on red with the advanced board option at PCBWAY. It's significantly more expensive but might be with it for the larger final batch.
