Adding Electrical Components
Once you have finished the drawer, you can began installing the electrical components to the cabinet and drawer.
Use a 125v AC to 12V DC adapter to add USB charging capability to the cabinet. I used a LED lighting driver off of Amazon to provide 12v to my USB charger. The adapter was designed to be a wall adapter, however, after looking at the pictures online, I was pretty certain I would be able to rewire it to be hard wired.
Disassemble the AC adapter, remove the slot pins, sand or grind off the raised section of the adapter back and then add leads and an exit grommet on the case, then reassemble the case.
Add a power port and the USB charger port, which has an internal step down from 12v to 5v. Use a dremel with a cutting wheel to cut out the opening for both components.
Use machine screws to attach the power port. You can use the screw as a bonding point for the ground wire.
Use 14ga. wire and heatshrink to wire the power inlet to the power switch and then to the driver. Add a lead to drop down the back of the cabinet which will connect to a power strip inside of the drawer.
Once you have the harness is installed, check the switch and USB ports for functionality.
Add a bonding jumper to the power strip to ground the drawer, as you don't want to use the slides of the drawer as a means of grounding. To do this you must disassemble the power strip and add the jumper to the existing grounding wire.
Once you have finished the bonding jumper and added the drag chain to the cable, route it through the cabinet and attach it to the cabinet. You will need to make a mounting bracket to attach the drag chain to.
Mount the power strip to the cabinet and organize cabling to maximize space within the cabinet. You can use rivnuts for attaching the drag chain to the inside of the cabinet, as well as a means of mounting adel clamps for cable management and for mounting the power strip to the drawer.
