For the longest time I had the right screen pegged as an OLED. Good power numbers, and it makes its own light. There's one problem with that, and it's a big one: OLED is not sunlight readable. ATLAS is a field instrument. It gets used outdoors. That alone kills it.

Enter Sharp. Their Memory-In-Pixel display is the same panel Panic used in the Playdate. Monochrome, sips power, good refresh, and it's genuinely readable in direct sun. The catch is that it's fully reflective, no ambient light, nothing to see.

I have a plan for that. Set the panel back a bit, Gorilla glass over the top, and light it from the side so the light washes across the face instead of trying to come through it. In the dark the device brings the frontlight up automagically.
