I had one of these toys back in the day. I used to love it! I have purchased used ones on Ebay and enjoy restoring them. I also wanted to create a new twist on this same idea. The original had a motor near the control center and a cable actually spun to mechanically spin the propeller of the chopper. I always wanted to make a clone of this toy but I wanted to put the motor on the helicopter itself and just use an RC motor ESC to spin an RC drone motor. I also wanted to use a micro servo to "TIP" the chopper forward or reverse to create directional movement that emulates the original as closely as possible. The last project like this used an RCA jack as the mechanical slip ring. I can do the same with this but chose instead to use an actual 4 wire slip ring.

Details

The schematic is very simple. The Vertibird will use a 12v barrel power supply. There is a 5V regulator and 2 standard servo tester boards as the "BRAINS". That's it. One servo tester will control the RC Moror ESC and the other tester will control a servo that TIPS the chopper Nose Down or Nose Up in order to create forward and reverse thrust.

The Main ship STL files will remain the same as the V1 Coast Guard Rescue. The new STL files will be put up on Thingiverse here:

The Control Sticks are adjustable so the Servo Tester Potentiometer and the Handle direction can by optimized for best operation.
