The switches allow for the input of a 5-digit binary (bit) or ternary (trit) number. A switch set in the up position represents 1, the middle position is 0, and the down position is -1. The corresponding decimal value is shown on the display.
The die LED indicator shows whether binary (two white LEDs) or ternary (three white LEDs) mode is selected. Red and blue LEDs indicate positive and negative numbers, respectively—chosen to evoke 'warm' (positive) and 'cold' (negative) temperatures. The mode is selected using the far-right switch.
A special feature allows the device to demonstrate a ternary relay. To activate this, set the mode switch to the center and the three middle data switches to the down position. The two remaining switches then function as the relay's coil and common.
