I decided to go with capacitive touch sensors for basic toggling of the lights, which is the main feature this project needs. For more advanced controls the companion app can be used.

To get a nice look and a good surface I started testing the use of aluminum corner profiles as electrodes, i discovered that carefull calibration will be needed when the size of the electrodes has been determined.

I also started CAD work on the housing, to be able to mount the profiles on the corner of a nightstand. A preview of this can be found in the attached screenshots. Next up are testprints to figure out sizing and looks. I have been thinking of mounting the microcontroller in a seperate housing, out of sight. Doing so would allow to reduce the size of the visible part, contributing to a more minimal feeling.

For now the planned features include: 1 electrode to toggle between all lights on and only mood-lighting (the smaller one) and another to toggle all lights on/off (the larger electrode).
