Gas-Electric E-Bike

DIY E-Bike Powered by a Gasoline Generator

It was a random idea and it just had to happen: Remove the batteries and replace with a trailer, gas generator and power supply. I asked my brother for power supply advice and he just happened to have one I could borrow for the project. A 120 VAC to 48 VDC 1000 watt power supply. The e-bike motor is a 48 VDC 750 watt motor. It goes 25 mph with batteries and still goes 23 MPH on generator power.
The trailer is a B.O.B. Yak trailer (rated for 70#) found on Marketplace. These are very nice trailers and a great design. I had the generator already. All I had to do was wire it up. The bike cargo rack/deck already had attachment points for a milk crate from the original e-bike project. I used an insulated leather glove as a vibration dampener and some random plumber strap and "Velcro" strap to secure the power supply. A ratchet strap holds the generator to the trailer. Plug it in and start it up! Too easy. The front end is very light and the handling is "squirely" but it works!

Now I need to figure out how far this will go on a tank of gas. For now I'll make some estimates.

It holds 1.1 gallons of fuel.

The specs state that at 1/4 load (450 watts  assuming 1800 watts is max sustained) it will run 8.1-9.6 hours.

I was seeing roughly 200 watts of power used on the e-bike display at 15 mph flat a level.

For simplicity, I'll assume between a combination of hills and acceleration periods it averages 450 watts on the high side and an average speed of 15 mph and 9 hours of run time. That would be 15 mph * 9 hours = 135 miles.

Only one way to find out!
