ApexNub is a pocket-sized multi-function controller designed to give users flexible physical control across different devices and workflows.

The device is built around the idea of one compact controller that can be customized for different use cases, including productivity shortcuts, gaming input, NFC tag functions, IR remote control, and motion-based controls.

The current prototype includes physical buttons, a joystick, a small display, motion input, NFC functionality, and companion app configuration. Through the app, users can remap buttons, adjust joystick response curves, assign input sequences, and configure different control modes.

This project is currently in the working prototype stage. I am using Hackaday.io to document the development process, share hardware and software progress, collect feedback, and prepare the project for the next stage toward production.

Current prototype features:
- Physical joystick and buttons
- Small onboard display
- NFC tag functionality
- Motion / tilt input
- Companion app configuration
- Button remapping and joystick response curve settings
- Mouse, keyboard, gamepad, IR, and NFC-related control modes

  • Early 3D-Printed Enclosure Iterations

Before reaching the current working prototype, I went through multiple enclosure iterations to test the overall shape, grip feel, joystick position, button placement, wall thickness, internal space, and assembly method.

The early white shells were mainly used to quickly check the basic form factor and how the device would feel in hand. Later versions moved closer to the current black prototype, with improved component placement, a more compact body, and better access for the joystick, buttons, display, NFC area, and internal electronics.
