The goal of AUTEUR was to make an e-ink writerdeck for film treatments that had a proper display and responsive keystrokes. Cramped screens and muddy typing were unacceptable for a daily driver. A few paths were explored that ultimately landed on an ESP32 driven Inkplate for reliability and instant-on behavior.

A bespoke, e-ink optimized application runs the AUTEUR word processor and includes Prose, Film and Markdown modes. The application runs in MicroPython on the ESP32 which is connected to the Inkplate via UART TX/RX for line-delta communication in real time.

A CH9350 is utilized to accept a standard USB keyboard to enable the ESP32's USB to be used for MSC file transfer between the device and a host computer.
