A project log for The H8 Mini - a 50th Anniversary Heath H8 Computer

The H8 was Heathkit's first 8-bit computer. This project is a miniature recreation of the H8, built with vintage components and techniques.

12 Sept 2026 -- The first rev.A PCBs are assembled and working. No cuts or patches needed! Power consumption on batteries is 25mA with the LEDs off, and 85mA with the LEDs active (and a bit higher with external 5v power).

I installed Jon Chapman's "Glitch Works" GWMON serial monitor program, which uses the 80C85's SID and SOD lines for serial communications. It can read/write to memory and I/O ports, Go to run a program, and download Intel Hex files. This greatly aided software development.

Glenn Roberts added Heath's PAM8 monitor, and he's working to integrate it into the H8 Mini's hardware. The classic Heath H8 "Your H8 is up and running" is now running on the H8 Mini! He also has a little music demo, keypad input, and routines to test the LED segments. These programs are on Glenn's github site (links in the "files" section).

Paul Schmidt made a 3D printed case style that looks just like a mini H8. He also printed keycaps and labels for the switches to match the original Heath H8. We took these units to the VCFMW show in Chicago on 12/Sept 2026. It was a hit! There's a picture of our mini H8 next to an original Heath H8 for reference.
