Why I made this

I wanted to improve the MatrixClock’s timekeeping and add useful features without changing its hardware.

The main focus was automatic quartz drift calibration using NTP. Rather than simply correcting the displayed time whenever it synchronises, the clock learns how quickly its quartz timebase gains or loses time and compensates between synchronisations.

Automatic drift calibration

Small timing errors build up over time. The firmware compares the clock’s time with NTP to learn its drift rate and apply a correction.

The web interface shows the learning progress and calculated correction, making the process visible rather than hiding it behind the scenes.

This helps the clock keep more accurate time between network updates. Results depend on the individual clock and operating conditions.

What else the upgrade adds

  • Stopwatch: an additional function using the clock’s existing buttons.
  • Home Assistant notifications: display messages from automations, such as temperatures, reminders and household alerts.
  • Web settings: configure the clock from a phone or computer on the same network.
  • Automatic daylight-saving handling: keep local time aligned with the configured time-zone rules.
  • Wireless firmware updates: install subsequent updates without reconnecting a USB cable.

Installing the firmware

The GitHub repository contains firmware downloads, installation instructions and a user manual.

Check the hardware compatibility and follow the appropriate installation route for your clock. Keep firmware downloads on GitHub so you always have access to the maintained release and its accompanying instructions.
