Overview

The goal of this project was to create a clean, modern, and minimal-component hardware solution that fits directly inside an original Sinclair ZX Spectrum enclosure. By leveraging the power of the Raspberry Pi Pico and optimized software emulators, PicoZX bridges the gap between vintage retro aesthetics and modern microcontroller capabilities.

Key Hardware Features

  • Form Factor: Custom-designed PCB (approx. 210mm × 130mm) engineered to fit into an original Sinclair ZX Spectrum case (minor case adjustments might be required).
  • Core Processing: Powered by a Raspberry Pi Pico / RP2040 microcontroller.
  • Display Output: Direct VGA output requiring minimal passive components (just 7 resistors for the RGB/Sync signal).
  • Keyboard Integration: Integrated foil connectors matching the exact QWERTY matrix of the original ZX Spectrum keyboard.
  • Audio & Controls:
    • On-board speaker for authentic retro sound effects.
    • Dedicated physical Reset button.
    • 9-pin DSUB ATARI joystick connector for classic gaming.
  • Storage & Expansion: Micro SD card slot for loading games, snapshots, and ROMs.
  • Minimalist Design: Highly optimized layout keeping the external component count extremely low.

Software & Firmware

  • Emulation: Runs optimized retro computer firmware (such as Fruit-Bat’s ZX Spectrum 128K emulator) supporting quick-save functionality.
  • Compatibility: Emulates both 48K and 128K ZX Spectrum environments, allowing you to run a massive library of classic software, games, and BASIC programs seamlessly.

I can't imagine a better use of modern PCB manufacturing technology with full-color solder mask than the ZX spectrum keyboard layout
