According to their blog, which you can see by clicking the link above and finding another link that refers to their previous article, they used a CNC to create the grid and then used a bunch of layers. Great result though.

It was not very clear for me from your blog, but did you add some grid in front of the LED strip? How did you make those lines in between the pixels?
