DAQiri: A Data Acquisition and Control Platform

A benchtop DAQ system based on the Parallax Propeller

DAQiri is a platform for doing benchtop data acquisition and control. The base system provides USB serial comms and some basic I/O (2 pushbuttons, 2 user LEDs), and brings the Propeller I/O lines out to 4 Multibus II card slots. Each card slot has 6 Propeller I/O, plus 4 'spare' connections which other slot I/O can be jumpered to. Each card slot also has a 12V main power rail, and a 5V 1A rail. The system is powered from a nominal 12V supply.

All design files will be shared, and open-source tools are used wherever possible.

Notes on mechanical design

PCB frame was constructed from Openbeam:

  • Horizontal members 167mm long
  • Vertical members 1 x 140mm and 2 x 40mm long

Brackets and feet were laser-cut from 3mm blue-tinted acrylic, supplied by Ponoko.

2 x 197mm long, 12mm dia. stainless steel rod was used to brace the feet and give the unit some 'heft' to prevent it skittering around the bench once cables are attached.

Fasteners used are M3 nuts, M3x8 (frame) and M3x12 (card guides) cap screws.

    PCB files will be uploaded once I have fixed a small error in the mounting hole placement of the card guide footprint,. You might also have noticed some kludge wires on the USB port in the photos - Rev A unfortunately has the USB pins reversed (fixed in Rev B).

    There is no software to speak of yet, although I did load a blinky light program to test the CPU and user LEDs. Software will only be required once I start producing accessory cards. I have a design ready to go for a 3 channel stepper motor driver (for 28BYJ-48 motors). After that will be a 4 channel 16-bit D/A card.
