This site is a great idea! I'm interested to see where it goes. Here are a couple things that I think could be improved:

(1) Image upload is a little clunky. There's no UI indicator to show that the image upload is in progress, so I didn't know right away if my image was being uploaded. Also, the images are cropped but the dimensions aren't published, so maybe an interface to drag my uploaded photo around the viewport would be nice.

(2) It took me a while to find this comment box. Maybe put it on the top of the thread, or collapse the feed if there are a ton of comments?

Overall, I like the site and I'm looking forward to publishing my next project!

1- Yes, image upload definitely needs improvement. We are still on alpha, so there are bunch of other things we are working on but we'll work on this.

2- This was suggested by a few other users as well. It's also on our list.

It seems there's no way to differentiate text as code with more than two lines. When selecting multiple lines and converting to code, there are breaks in between each line. Two lines can be brought together, but trying to bring a third in splits the first two.

Forgive me if this has been stated, but I have problem getting the edit menu to come up in Build Instruction steps. It seems as though I have to triple click to get the menu to come up, but often that selects all of the text too and upon adding a picture will delete all of the text.

I though adding a table might help avoid that problem, but then it become a problem of being able to select a cell in the table. For instance I was able to place a picture in a cell, then tried clicking the adjacent cell and it wouldn't select, but I was able to select the next one and add a picture, but it wouldn't let me go back and select the skipped cell. Probably because I am using Chrome, which I am really beginning to hate.

Hello! The editor pops up when you select a text or double click on a word. Obviously, this should be improved (we are working on it) for adding photos (since you are not adding photos on selected text) but we do have another way of adding photos.

You can simply drag and drop any photo you have on your computer to instruction add page (or details/logs). Hope this helps.

Just an FYI. The grey wording on grey/black boxes is unreadable (can't see it at all) on my XP machine (IE8 w/all updates). it's on DVI connection from DELL notebook in docking station. I have a KVM and can switch to a Linux machine running Firefox latest rev on the same monitor and it works fine. Not sure it this is my problem, Windoz or web page but it's a problem you should be aware of.

Hey, thanks for the heads up! This happens on old IE browsers (before 10). Modern browsers like Chrome or Firefox won't have any problems. We'll add this to our fix list.

Also the comment above mine says "this comment has been deleted" because I made an accidental double-post, how about a time delay such that deleting a comment within 30 seconds just makes it disappear, while waiting longer replaces with the "has been deleted" message

Agreed. I want multiple levels of comment depth. I also want comment voting, sorting, and a unified comment page for viewing all threads related to one project.

Are we asking too much? Certainly not... I know the devs are working on all this stuff!

You can embed YouTube in a few different ways (the implementation does have a couple bugs but they're working on them):

1. Just paste the link as text in an edit window and press enter
2. Paste the "embed" code from YouTube (this is an iframe)

You can also use the link as an external link on the main project sidebar (this doesn't embed it but links to it).

Obviously we want this to get better as the site progresses.

Versioning was brought up before and we are definitely considering it. It could be great but we'd have to find the right implementation.

Other small details; Yes, small CSS transitions (and other little details) add a lot to the experience! We're on it.

Just a minor one: There doesn't seem to be any feedback when uploading project images - I thought it was broken for a while and then suddenly my image appeared! Some kind of indication that something is happening would be great!

I've reported this bug. This is especially a problem if you try to upload an image more than 3mb because the upload fails with zero feedback. Even though I know about it, it takes me a couple of seconds to figure out what happened.

Oh! And a way to make an external link MAJORLY IMPORTANT, i.e. featured at the very top of the details page. I posted a code project which is hosted by SourceForge, and what I really want is for users to be presented with a giant blink marquee CLICK ME to take them to my "real" external project page (which has complete documentation, license info etc)

URL options: Right now you can add any URL you want with custom titles. Just select "other" when you are adding links. We are thinking about adding more options.

Making external links more important: This is a little bit complex issue because this feature is designed for links to support your project. That could be some source code on Github, Twitter/Facebook links for your project, Kickstarter page, etc. So far, it's being used multiple times on many projects. So if we were to highlight this more, then which link we are going to highlight? Or if everyone adds links to project documentation, how does that help to our readers or why Hackaday Project exists? :)

Tried a bit more this morning. I think I probably misunderstood how the "details" and "project logs" text works. What I intuitively expected was the separate page was meant just for editing the text, which would then appear on my project page. But it seems the site is designed to show only a short, no-formatting summary. That effectively makes the project a hierarchy pages. I guess that structure wasn't clear to me until now...

You guys have done a great job on this site. It's not my intention to complain, because this really is working. But what I'm hoping you'll do on a future rev is allow much more editorial control over how the text appears when displayed on the project page.

For example, on www.dorkbotpdx.org (where I often write blog entries about my projects), the site's home page shows summaries of blog articles with formatting, links, photos. When you create a blog entry, there's an option on the toolbar to place the location where the break happens between the summary and full article. That's really important, because sometimes the automatic placement will cut off something important that really wants to be on the main page.

For many of the smaller projects (or older ones) I've uploaded, my preference would be to have all the text appear on the project page. Sure, it can still be a hierarchy, but it just doesn't feel natural (at least for me) to present a small project in that format. I really want to just show everything on the same page. But the hierarchy could be really nice for a larger project, or one that grows larger over time.

So I guess the two "take away" bits of feedback here are that the hierarchical nature of the project page was apparent to me. As you can see from my own website, I'm not much of a web designer, so I have no useful input on how the structure might be made more apparent.

Of course the other bit of feedback is my desire for the formatting, links, images to appear on the project page instead of just a no-formatting summary, with an option to set where the break happens, so I can control what portion is the summary, or even set the break at the end so the entire thing appears on the project page.

Hello Paul, thank you again for your feedback. We made some changes on how we show excerpts. In the past, it was the first N characters of the details or logs. Which created problems like formatting, paragraphs etc.

We changed it to show only the first paragraph (first real paragraph, not titles etc.). It still doesn't show bolds, italics or links; only pure text to give a preview about the project details/logs and if members are interested, then everything else is showed behind the read more link.

Having used this site a bit more over the last few days, I can see now how you're trying to build something that, in the long term, could be way more awesome than just traditional blogging.

Of course, when I got the invite a few days ago, I didn't actually *read* any instructions (if there were any). I just instinctively applied my blog publishing paradigm to this site, because, well, that's the only way I've ever shared my projects. I then saw everything here though my blog-colored glasses.

Most of the 30-some projects I've uploaded so far do have extensive writeups. But they're all in a blog article or single web page format. Maybe next week I'll try copying more of my writings over, or write new stuff. But to be honest, the way this site is designed now, where content about a single project can't all appear together on the same project page with basic but controllable formatting.... well.... it just feels a bit limiting.

I'm not saying you should redesign the project page. Who knows, maybe this way really is better once you get used to it? Then again, in traditional software, usually a successful path involves maintaining "legacy" compatibility with a path forward towards more powerful features. There certainly are a lot of projects already with blog-style writeups, which don't cleanly translate to uploading here.

But if I actually knew much about designing websites, my own site wouldn't look so bad. I think you guys really are onto something great here. Until today, I didn't even really realize I was trying to fit everything about my projects' pages into a single-page blog article formatting paradigm. I just want to share with you my thought process.

Also, looks like GIF images can't be used. Most of my images are JPEG or PNG, but some are in GIF format. Guess I can convert them if I really want to upload those...

Just uploaded a couple more projects.

Check out the photo it chose to use for my light table project, just a closeup of a single LED. The first photo I uploaded was the main photo showing whole thing. It was showing in the first spot and as the large image when I published the project, so every indication was the whole-project photo would be the main one. But somehow the (relatively lame) single LED proto ended up in the 1st spot and gets used to represent the whole project. Hardly what I'd intended.

I know you guys are still working on the site, and with the announcement on the main site you're probably crazy busy. But I do hope you'll eventually work on a way to choose which photo represents the project.

Also, is it possible to upload more than 6 pictures? Some of my projects have many dozens of photos. I'm guessing other people will too, especially for big awesome projects like Burning Man stuff.

I would recommend fleshing out the "Build Details" section of your projects. You can put as many photos there as you like (there is a 3mb per photo limit but otherwise...)

Yeah, I know this is all alpha and I don't expect everything to be perfect. But at least some basic text formatting is needed if you want me and others to compose narratives about our projects.

Hello again Paul,

Yes, that's correct. Project can have only 6 photos but you can add more photos in Project Details section. You can drag and drop images and they'll be uploaded to the project.

We also do have basic formatting which can be accessed by selecting the text you would like to format on Details or Project Logs sections. Right now we have titles, bold, italic, lists, quote and code. Linking can also be done in the same way. Let me know if this helps.

Finally, I added selecting the main project photo feature to our list. Thank you!

I have no idea why it all ended up as a big wall of text on the project page. I probably did something wrong. But I'll confess now, I'm mostly approaching this site like most casual users probably would (eg, not actually reading any instructions, just trying obvious stuff).

I have a LOT of projects, sadly many without photos or much info anymore, but many with a lot I've written. It's going to take me quite a while to get it all onto here.....
