Hello!  I just signed up as a new member, and as part of the onboarding process, I was prompted to select tags of interest.  I figured, "Sure, I like lots of things!  Why not?" and clicked on most of them, thinking that they'd be populating some sort of random discovery feed or something.  I just realized that it instead auto-followed a whole bunch of random projects.  On the one hand, I can kinda see the intention here of getting projects some good exposure, but on the other, I feel like the "projects I like and follow" section of my profile is totally bogus now and not reflective of my actual likes.  So now I'm going through them manually and unfollowing most of them, which feels tedious.

We're trying to improve the onboarding process and recently changed this part so that new members would initially follow more projects. This is because personal feeds were only populated by people you follow, so it was sparse for new members. We'll see how well it works out and modify it accordingly. We're sorry that's it's been tedious for you. Hope you find a bunch of projects that you do like.

That random follow was a really bad idea.  

- First, it is not random. Out of about 3500 profiles with projects, less then 100 (maybe 50) are recommended. Always the same 100 guys/projects. This narrows very much the possible spectrum of interests.

- Since HAD decided to flood all newcomers with automatic following, there is no interest for the other thousands of users that might have interesting projects. Because newcomers were flooded, they have no bandwidth to follow projects or users other then the ones from the automatic follow.

- The newcomers are cheated at their enrollment. They are asked for their interests, but in fact they are subscribed to the same projects or users, forever. Without their will or knowledge.

- Old users that contributes to HAD io, and spend lot of effort to document their projects, are unfairly eclipsed by the automatic follow process. New people will almost never have time for anything else then their automatic follow.

In conclusion, by automatically subscribing the new users to the same project, you are unfair to everybody, both newcomers or old content providers.

Isn't it much fair to just set the default feed to "Global feed" (instead of "My Feed"), and let people do their own choices?

Thanks, Jasmine!  The rationale makes sense.  As a user, I think what I'd prefer to see instead as part of the on-boarding would be an interstitial step:  "Based on your interests, here's a list of projects you might be interested in!"  If my interest choices could spawn a populated list of suggestions with follow buttons, I could scroll through them and click "Follow" on all of the ones that look cool, without feeling forced.  This is basically what I've ended up doing anyway:  after purging the initial set of follows, I'm browsing through all projects by tag and hitting the ones I like.

Here's something that's annoyed me for a long time: Right now, there's no way to add sections or anything other than components to project component lists. Would it be possible to give users the possibility to add section headers?

I have some comments for the project logs:.  They can get a bit too much once you get to above 10 or so. Mines are easily in the 30's.
- TOC for the logs with date of log number, creation, update and may be with a comment field.  Also same info for the individual project logs.
- a navigation bar at bottom to skip the log pages

4 weeks ago, I placed and payed an order to the Hackaday Store: order number 5897, for one DSLOGIC and 2 HAD TShirts. 2 weeks later after I was charged, nothing. The order wasn't yet shipped.

I wrote to store@hackaday.com, and Matt Berggren replied very fast and polite, telling me that the order might have been cancelled by export restrictions, that he will try to find out more, and that I WAS NOT CHARGED for that order, but I WAS CHARGED. Since then, 2 more weeks has passed, and still nothing.

In the last 2 weeks I wrote back twice, once to say thank you to Matt, and the second time to Hackaday Store again, this time also attaching a picture with the page stamped and signed by my bank, picture that shows that the payment was executed and the money were sent to Hackaday Pasadena on 24 August. None of my questions has been answered.

The order was payed with a $59.94 coupon (from 2 Stickvises won at sponsored HAD contests) and $70.03 from my VISA card.

Do you think I can still get the ordered items? If yes, please let me know what should I do.

If it is not possible to send a DSLOGIC to Romania, is there any way to cancel the transaction and still buy something else for the 59.94 coupon? I am mostly worried about the coupon, because for the money I can go anytime to my bank and blacklist the transaction.

3.
If 2 (or 4) weeks were not enough to clarify the order, can you please tell me how long it is suppose to take? I am not familiar with US export laws.

Hey RoGeorge. The logistics of the store is going through changes and we've also stopped shipping to some countries due to US restrictions on some items. I'll take a look into this today and get back to you.

Using google chrome the tables on the instructions and anywhere else will delete data when you hover over them with the mouse, not a big issue just don't use the tables.  But if you ever want to fix them they don't work.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the instructions are meant to be more step by step, so rich formatting isn't supported as well as in the details or project logs. I'll put in a ticket for this anyway. Thanks.

I'd like to be able to reorder the "things I built", projects, and project links so I can better organize things.  Anyone else want this?

Sure.  being able to control the ordering can be useful.

We've made a note of this. Reordering 'things I've built' & external links is more likely than being able to define the order of projects. Although I can see being able to highlight a particular project or two would be good. Thanks!

hi, my profile project order is stuck with the least important project first. can't seam to change order? any fix for that ?

Hey Ben, there is some algorithm which decides in what they appear.  It's something to do with date added/last updated/number of skulls/follows, all with a pinch of pepper for flavor. It should balance out over time.

I edited some photos in a project album (added a new photo, deleted an old one) but when I clicked "Publish" it said my (unchanged) project description was too long. Apparently the server had expanded all the reserved characters to their HTML representation (e.g. """, "&") and was trying to literally put those back into the description, making it too long. Also, at that point, I could only delete text from the description field to make it short enough, I couldn't re-enter those characters after I deleted the expanded strings (hitting a quote on the keyboard just didn't have any effect). I had to click Publish after I finished making the text short enough, and then I could go in again and edit the text properly.

Is this a known problem?

Hi, is there a bug with the "project follower list"? My project suddenly jumped in follower numbers. I don't ever remember having 59 followers. It wasn't more than 15... This is the project https://hackaday.io/project/5334-serialplot .

Hello Hasan, we've improved the onboarding process for new signups recently and it means they are following more hackers and projects based on the tags they've chosen. The aim is to get them exposed more quickly to projects that would interest them. Cheers!

Yes, and that's how we also can see people with one project and no activity in the last 6 or more months bubbling to the first pages, just because their project happened to have a fancy search keyword into it's text.

And that's how the most valuable indicator, the number of followers, just turned into nonsense.

davedarko, looks like the latest 180-200 zombi followers were made for you by Google. It's easy to recognize a zombi follower: they are following around 50-70 profiles and have no projects. Google recommends your profile in 2 out of the 28 categories. Considering a new user will chose an average of 7 domains of interest, then half of the newcomers are subscribed to your profile.

Sometime the feed notification (red number thingy) tells me new events that happened a day ago after I have already click on the feed button and seen them multiple times.  I am using Chrome.

The red flags on messages and feed have Never worked if more than one tab is open. Win7 & Firefox.

Is it possible to change the project photo? I uploaded photos to the gallery at the beginning of the project, and now I have better photos.

I'm using Win7 & Firefox, and reading previous messages is impossible when anyone is commenting on any channel.

Found something annoying - when I mention someone and hit enter in a comment or message window, then every word written after it will be deleted after hitting enter again. Super annoying.

I am unable to update my profile.  Even when I log in, it tells me my username is already taken.

This could typically mean that the username you are trying to set has already been assigned to a different hacker.  Could you please try updating with a different username? If it still doesn't work, please let us know.

I'm using the .io site from a few computers, all of them using recent and up-to-date firefox running various OS-es (variants of Linux and windows).

Once I log into the site from particular computer with name/password and then, every time I restart PC/broswer and open the .io site, I'm automatically re-logged again, as expected. However, once I log in from different computer, the login credentials from the first computer are "forgotten" and I have to log in on it.

I don't think it is local computer problem, the behavior is consistent for a months on different platforms. It's not any major annoyance, just a little thing to tune.
