As the title suggests, this is a general purpose floppy driver for the Arduino. It is currently under construction, and will provide raw read/write access to floppy disks from the Arduino via a custom shield.
One of the secret plans behind this project is to simultaneously develop a dirt cheap floppy solution for an old 8-bit computer.
How about a WD37C65 chip? It has an 8 bit data bus and easily connects to old 8 bit computers. It requires no external devices except a couple of pull up resistors. There are app notes about how to use it. Parts are available on eBay for $5-$10.
