So the plan so far has been find cheap stuff on ebay in a few minutes that i can buy in bulk maybe from china , order it without really reading about it and see how it goes.....

Great project! Why do you want to use 100 uC and drivers? Did you consider a multiplexing strategy? You plan to use stepper motors? Could it be easier to use gear motors and a simple position detection approach?
... just trying to simplify the 200 components layout...
