Every time an object is hanging off your cursor, you can hit the Tab key to bring up the object's properties before placement. Focus should (generally) be set to the field you are most likely to modify first. This is by design. Select a command to place and object, hit Tab and modify it's properties, then place it. These nested commands are all over Altium. Let go and learn to love the bomb.
