Overview of the finished project below:

The project idea started when I got this figure from Blizzard's booth at Comic-Con:

My wife suggested lighting it in some fashion and I happened to have some 3-color LEDs and an Arduino sitting around, so this seemed like a good way to put those to use.

We bought a simple wooden box from Michaels with a magnetic latch to use as the base. I forgot to get a picture before we started, but here it is after the painting (you can also see the LED peeking out the top through the hole we drilled):
