I think I'll wait and see others' hypotheses (and whether I can get it working as I intended) before giving it away ;)

by which I mean... it *is* working as I intended, as best I can tell, but bumping up the capacitor value defeated that... so I guess I don't understand it as well as I thought... Or maybe it was due to the output-resistance of my 0->3.3V circuit... hmmm....
