The ESP8266 modules are really powerful and super cheap, but difficult to connect to existing boards. A lot of boards either have headers for an XBee module or they have a shield that allows you to connect an XBee module. I wanted to leverage this existing ecosystem and allow people to use an ESP-12E module instead of an XBee.
