Olimex has recently released an open source EMG shield for the assduino. I know how much people hate it on here so it's important to use one.

I lucked out hard and practically stole 10 tubes of SS-25 conductive electrical/thermal silicone off of ebay for cents on the dollar. This will allow me to scale up my artificial muscle production drastically look at this link for more. https://hackaday.io/project/8744-joule-heating-actuated-artificial-muscles
There are these boards available on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/281037857443 that should suffice for switching high current ultra-capacitors to drive the muscles.
This entails finishing the ultra capacitors first but I am very close to higher energy densities than lithium ion which will be required to reduce bulk of the finished prosthesis.
A whole new hand will need to be designed the e-nable is simply too simple to be of use. The aim of this project is to produce something that can be built for under 500 dollars with robust materials that can stand up to everyday use and also scale with a growing child.

So, that looks like master chief's arm, stolen from Halo?
Also this technology exists. the 'research' you are waiting on, is the actual application of this idea. I know this because I deal with bionic/biotic group that share advancements of current technology.
I should mention that these arms also feature custom built 3D printed parts to fit the wearers desire.
