Ah, the makerspace is pretty limited in scope through the Roseville County Library. They have teen makerspace events for two hours a week where I've been volunteering, and we've been talking about a Sunday afternoon makerspace for a broader audience in 2015, but it's far from certain or well defined.

Thanks for the follow ken! I know there is a guy in my area that would be really interested in this hive project, as he and a friend were working on something similar with a raspberry pi. More than one person trying to tackle the problem is a good sign!

Absolutely, I'm far from the first to weigh beehives, but I can't directly use most designs I've seen because they rely on mains power which would be impossible at my apiaries, although I can get mains power a few hundred yards away for the BBB datalogger. I could probably just oversize my solar panels and batteries to make up for wasted power consumption, but I want to focus on something that can be reasonably repeated by other beekeepers.

I've met all sorts of people who want to monitor their hives, but it's extremely rare that they'll document their work online in a useful way and I'm always re-inventing the wheel as I learn. Please encourage your friend to start a project on hackaday.io so we can share knowledge and trade tips!
