Avalon Sunshade Hack
Antonio wrote 11/25/2021 at 07:58 • 0 pointsI have a rear power sunshade from a 2011 Toyota Avalon. I'm trying to configure it to open when somebody approaches my front door. I'm going to put a sign on it, like hello or Merry Christmas.
I'm using a Ryobi 18v batter with a 18v > 12v step down. I can get it to open and close but only by going directly to the motor. How can I get it to open/close using the relay? model number 85911-07010? Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Antonio

I recommend against driving the motor directly for multiple reasons. The good news is that it's almost certainly connected to the CANbus. CANbus would be a nice non-invasive control mechanism, so spying on the CANbus while it open/closes and then reproducing that signal would active the sunshade.
If this is beyond you then you could remove the button from the dash, figure out what kind of switch it is with a multimeter and then replace it's function with a relay circuit.

Thanks, Gravis. I probably bit off more than I could chew for my first project. I'll look into both suggestions.

Perhaps... but you cannot expand your skills and knowledge by only doing things you already know how to do. Good luck, friend.

And for hardware I would recommend something like a CAN bus Pi hat (and a raspberry pi, of course) for ease of use.
Raspberry Pis (and often their 3rd party hats) are normally easy-setup for new people and has great documentation.
