Hacking on large wall mounted LCD clocks?

Has anyone taken over the large LCD display in a large (~10 inch) wall mounted clock?  Alternatively, is there a source of the display and driver board that can be bought and programmed directly?  They all seem to be glass displays that are driven by edge contacts, and I don't know how to tap into that connector.
