Swapping a Lipo battery and overcharge protection in lipo
Nikhil wrote 11/02/2020 at 18:00 • 0 pointsBought a cheap bluetooth headphones with terrible battery life because I like the form factor and I get to tinker. battery is 200mah and i want to swap a 350 mah instead. What should be my considerations, except of course matching voltage, size ?
Here are a couple of pics: https://ibb.co/album/m5r5Hn. The red/orange cables go straight from the battery to the board. There is only one bluetooth IC. I don't know if there should be some some sort of overcharge protection IC ? Do lipo batteries have in-built overcharge protection ?
Thank you!

Most LIPO batteries have built-in overcharge protection - Yes. There are normally 2 ICs that provide protection on the tiny pcb that is part of the battery. You can check the flip side of the battery pcb to see if the ICs are there. Not only is there over-charge protection, those ICs also protection against over-discharge, short circuit, etc.

Bang on. I checked the battery a more carefully and sure enough, behind the solder points, folded away was a circuit with 2 ICs . Thank you for the info

Batteries can have their own protection circuit integrated. It would be on the little PCB right at the battery. But I can't see one in the picture. So it is quite likely that this one hasn't.
In this case you can just replace it by other one cell 3.7V battery - preferably also without any protective circuit. The circuitry above the main chip could easily be the charging circuit. It's just made out of a few transistors and resistors. All it probably does is limiting the 5V from the USB to the 4.2V maximum voltage of the battery. And may be cut off at 2.5 or 2.7V.

Hi Florian. thank you for your help. My current battery does have a protection circuit with 2 ICs . I have ordered a 3.7 350mah battery. Thank you
